Kent found out on Monday morning where the Olympic torch will be when it winds its’ way around the county in July.

A key point of the Opening  Ceremony will see the lighting of the Olympic Stadium cauldron with the Olympic  Flame. Representing  peace, unity and friendship, the Flame will enter the UK on Friday 18 May 2012 and start its journey around the UK the following  morning at sunrise from Land’s End.

For its 70 day tour of the UK the Torch will  be carried by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers, each nominated by members of  the public and each with their own unique story to share.

From 17 – 20 July, towns and villages all across Kent will play a role in this journey, and you can look at an interactive map of which streets the Torch will be run down in your community in Kent here..  A phenomenal 37 different Kent communities will have their chance to host the Torch. The Olympic Torch Relay will shine a spotlight on the people and places of Kent and demonstrate that the Olympic spirit is alive and well.

Dover and Maidstone will be two of 66 evening celebration locations across the UK, and in addition to those, Kent will also host eight photo stops, two lunch stops AND two breakfast starts of the Torch.

We also now know 6, 000 of the 8, 000 Torch Bearers who have been chosen to run with the Torch.

  Here are some facts about the Torch Relay:

•   The Torch will be on the road from around 8am-7pm each day
•   120 Torch bearers will run with the Torch each day
•   The Torch will       travel 80-100 miles each day
•   The Torch will       require:
•   300 crew members
•   10,000 uniforms
•   8,750 hotel rooms
•   52,500 meals
•   3,150 vehicle washers

  Paralympic Torch Relay

As well as the Olympic Torch Relay there will also be a shorter Paralympic  Torch Relay.  This will be run overnight on Tuesday 28 August from Stoke Mandeville straight to the Olympic Stadium.  Nominations to be a Torchbearer for the Paralympic Torch have closed.

The London 2012 Paralympic Torch Relay programme will begin on Friday 24 August 2012 with the first flame lighting event to be held in London. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, the greater Belfast area, Edinburgh and Cardiff will each host a flame lighting moment and an evening Paralympic Flame Festival. A special ceremony will be held at the last Flame Festival in Stoke Mandeville, home of the Paralympic Movement, during which all four flames will be brought together to create the Paralympic Flame.

Community groups are encouraged to hold their own Flame Festival during that Bank Holiday weekend.

  Paralympic Tickets:

Tickets for the London 2012 Paralympic Games will be on sale  again in April  2012.  GB Paralympics team finished second in the medals table at the  Beijing 2008 Games and have great hopes for the 2012 London Games.

The Paralympic Games take place between 29th August and 9th  September 2012, with 20 sports taking place at 19 venues. It is expected that  over 4,000 athletes will compete from 170 countries around the world.
